Technologies for a Greener Tomorrow
The automotive industry is spending billions of dollars to lower the dependency on oil and to minimize the carbon emissions it produces. The automotive R&D has largely focused on five alternative fuel technologies for the future.

Electric Vehicles (EV) - An electric vehicle is an alternative fuel car that uses electric motors and motor controllers instead of an internal combustion engine (ICE). In most cases, electrical power is derived from battery packs carried on board the vehicle.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) - A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is a vehicle that combines a conventional propulsion system with a rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) to achieve better fuel economy than a conventional vehicle.

Natural Gas Vehicle - A natural gas vehicle or NGV is an alternative fuel vehicle that uses compressed natural gas (CNG) or, less commonly, liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a clean alternative to other automobile fuels.

Hydrogen / Fuel Cell - A hydrogen vehicle is a vehicle that uses hydrogen as its on-board fuel for motive power. In hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicles, the hydrogen is combusted in engines in fundamentally the same method as traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. In fuel-cell conversion, the hydrogen is reacted with oxygen to produce water and electricity, the latter being used to power an electric traction motor.

Ethanol E85 - E85 is an alcohol fuel mixture that typically contains a mixture of up to 85% denatured fuel ethanol and gasoline or other hydrocarbon (HC) by volume. E-85 ethanol is used in engines modified to accept higher concentrations of ethanol. Such flexible-fuel vehicles (FFV) are designed to run on any mixture of gasoline or ethanol with up to 85% ethanol by volume."
